Toen
deze zomer het nieuws naar buiten kwam dat de 93-jarige Italiaanse journalist,
oprichter van La Repubblica en
politicus (hij was lid van het Italiaanse parlement) Eugenio Scalfari (93) een
gesprek met paus Franciscus had, waarin hij een voorstel had gedaan dat de RK
kerk de “excommunicatie” van Spinoza zou opheffen en Pascal zalig zou
verklaren, zou de paus enige dingen over Spinoza hebben gezegd, zoals blijkt
uit dit citaat uit het artikel dat Scalfari schreef voor La Repubblica waarin het 8 juli 2007 verscheen

non so come Lei la pensa in proposito. "Ho capito, lei parla di Spinoza e
di Pascal. Vuole riproporre questi suoi due temi?".
Grazie, comincio dall'Etica di Spinoza. Lei sa che di
nascita era ebreo, ma non praticava quella religione. Arrivò nei Paesi Bassi
provenendo dalla sinagoga di Lisbona. Ma in pochi mesi, avendo pubblicato
alcuni saggi, la sinagoga di Amsterdam emise un durissimo editto nei suoi
confronti. La Chiesa cattolica per qualche mese cercò di attirarlo nella sua
fede. Lui non rispondeva e aveva disposto che i suoi libri fossero pubblicati
soltanto dopo la sua morte. Nel frattempo però alcuni suoi amici ricevevano copie
dei libri che andava scrivendo. L'Etica in particolare, arrivò a conoscenza
della Chiesa la quale immediatamente lo scomunicò. Il motivo è noto: Spinoza
sosteneva che Dio è in tutte le creature viventi: vegetali, animali, umani. Una
scintilla di divino è dovunque. Dunque Dio è immanente, non trascendente. Per
questo fu scomunicato.

nu Giuseppe Nardi vandaag in Katholiches.info de zaak nog eens ophaalde onder de titel
"Papst Franziskus und die Seligsprechung von Blaise Pascal," vond ik
het wel aardig dit hier vast te houden, daar het de fraaie titel opleverde die
in de kop van dit log staat,
Scalfari forderte nämlich gleich im Nachsatz,
Franziskus solle die „Exkommunikation“ gegen den jüdischen Philosophen Baruch
Spinoza aufheben.

Scalfari verzocht uiteraard niet dat de paus de door de Sefardische Gemeenschap van Amsterdam uitgesproken herem zou opheffen, maar de veroordeling van Spinoza's werk door het Vaticaan zou terugtrekken. Daarom stond "excommunicatie" ook tussen aanhalingstekens: dat was "bij wijze van spreken." Maar dat wordt kennelijk niet door iedereen begrepen.
