José Benardete (1928 – 2016) zijn twee artikelen over Spinoza staan online

De aanleiding voor dit blog is de lopende discussie tussen Henk Keizer en mij, waarin wij van mening verschillen over enige stellingen in deel II van de Ethica. Dit werd voor mij aanleiding om weer eens Jonathan Bennett, A Study of Spinoza’s Ethics (1984) uit de kast te halen en daarin m.n. §44 “Ideas of ideas” te herlezen – voor de zoveelste keer. Ingewikkelde materie - uitdagend gebracht. Precies over de tekst die wij onder de loep hebben (2/21s) zegt hij niets zinnigs te kunnen maken, maar schrijft in een voetnoot #22: “It is however, treated with respect by one of the deepest and most challenging Spinoza papers in recent years, Bernadete’s “Spinozistic Anomalies, at pp. 64f.”

Dat maakte mij nieuwsgierig en ik ging op zoek naar hem en zijn werk over Spinoza. Het volgende obituary in de NYT bracht mij snel op de hoogte met de persoon. 

 

Eric Schliesser, wiens mentor en collega Benardete was, had op zijn blog eveneens een In Memoriam voor José Benardete.

Hij bleek volgens Wayne I. Boucher’s Spinoza in English: A Bibliography en ook de Duitse Spinoza Bibliografie, twee artikelen over Spinoza te hebben geschreven – en laten die nu bij verder zoeken op een pagina met zijn publicaties door iemand van zijn universiteit, Syracuse University, allemaal als PDF online zijn gezet (dat zouden meer universiteiten moeten doen…):

[PDF] Ik heb het nog maar een keer en vluchtig-snel gelezen, maar kan mij in Bennett’s aanduiding vinden. Het is zeker een rustige en bedachtzame herlezing waard.  

• José Benardete, “Therapeutics and hermeneutics.” In E. Curley & P. F. Morean (eds.) Spinoza: Issues and Directions, E. J. Brill, Leiden, 1990 [PDF]

[1] Apart from some fragmentary observations in Wittgenstein, a teleological account of mathematics has perhaps never been undertaken. Teleology and mathematics have been regarded as absolutely poles apart. Thus in his ferocious attack on teleology, Spinoza suggests that our innate propensity to explain the world teleologically 'might well have sufficed to conceal the truth from the human race for all eternity, if mathematics had not furnished another standard of verity in considering solely the essence and properties of figures without regard to their final causes'. I do not doubt that a mathematical account is never teleological, but I am suggesting that an account of mathematics may have to be teleological. [p. 211, hij verwijst aan 't slot naar de pp's 34-36, waarin hij argumenteert, waarom de filosoof moet proberen het doel van de mathematicus te achterhalen]

[2] Op zijn laatste bladzijde, EPILOGUE, deze alinea:
"At the same time I should be reluctant to believe that our metaphysical ascent has been altogether a failure. In hearkening to the lure of the infinite, we have pursued it both in the small and in the large, and if we have looked to mathematics for light, we have no less undertaken to fetch light of our own into mathematics. Almost in a Spinozistic mood I am tempted to say that apart from the infinite nothing can either be or be conceived. For the finite and the infinite are polar opposites, and though only one of the two may be empirically accessible, either is intelligible apart from the other. Both logically and  cosmologically, it is the peculiar destiny of mind to open up into the prospect of an infinite horizon."[p. 285]
