Alexander Douglas laat Christoph Wittich met zijn #Spinoza-kritiek aan het woord

Op 26 mei 2019 had ik het blog: Christoph Wittich (1625-1687) en zijn Anti-Spinoza

Vandaag ontdek ik dat Alexander X. Douglas, Lecturer in Philosophy, University of St. Andrews [personal website], over wie ik vaker een blog had [cf.], deze maand enige blogs aan Wittich's Anti-Spinoza wijdde.

Op 10 okt. 1019 bracht hij zijn "draft translation of the preface to Christoph Wittich’s Anti-Spinoza, entitled ‘On the Method of Demonstration’. Wittich criticises Spinoza’s use of the synthetic method, and this ends up being the basis of his criticism of the Ethics in general."

Op 13 okt. 2019  kwam hij met: "More of Wittich’s Anti-Spinoza: the Criticism of Ethics, Part 1, Definition 3"

Douglas vertaalt Wittich, laat dus Wittich aan het woord, zonder enig commentaar op zijn betoog te geven. Ik ben benieuwd hoe hij hiermee verder gaat.

Aanvulling 1 november 2019
Intussen kwam Douglas op 28 oktober met een derde blog; en daarin treedt hij wel in discussie met Wittich. Het wordt nu ook beduidend interessanter, naar mijn gevoel.

N.a.v. het betoog van Douglas over Wittich merk ik hier op dat Spinoza in de TIE halverwege § 99 het volgende opmerkt:

Unde possumus videre apprime nobis esse necessarium, ut semper a rebus physicis, sive ab entibus realibus, omnes nostras ideas deducamus, progrediendo, quoad ejus fieri potest, secundum seriem causarum ab uno ente reali ad aliud ens reale, et ita quidem, ut ad abstracta et universalia non transeamus, sive ut ab iis aliquid reale non concludamus, sive ut ea ab aliquo reali non concludantur: Utrumque enim verum progressum intellectus interrumpit.

Zo zien we dat het, om al onze ideeën van natuurlijke dingen, dat is van reële dingen af te leiden, nodig is om zoveel als mogelijk van oorzaak naar oorzaak te gaan, dat wil zeggen, van het ene reële ding naar het andere reële ding, zonder ooit onze toevlucht te nemen tot abstracte en universele begrippen, of dat nu is om daaruit tot iets reëels te besluiten of omgekeerd om uit iets reëels iets abstracts of universeels af te leiden. Thus we can see that it is before all things necessary for us to deduce all our ideas from physical things — that is, from real entities, proceeding, as far as may be, according to the series of causes, from one real entity to another real entity, never passing to universals and abstractions for the purpose of either deducing some real entity from them or deducing them from some real entity. Tot slot wijs ik erop dat Alexander X. Douglas in zijn Spinoza and Dutch Cartesianism: Philosophy and Theology. [Oxford University Press, 2015], in hoofdstuk 5 al zeer uitgebreid inging op Christoph Wittiich's  Anti-Spinoza.  "I shall then turn to the most thorough Dutch Cartesian response to the Ethics, Wittich’s Anti-Spinoza. This work, published posthumously in 1690, was an incredibly close and hostile reading of the Ethics, commenting individually on almost every proposition. As Christiane Hubert describes it, it was ‘precise, meticulous, exhaustive’. Verbeek speculates that it was compiled out of notes that Wittich had prepared in order to give private tuition on Cartesian philosophy. The second part of this chapter will examine how Wittich responded to Spinoza’s main anti-Dutch Cartesian claims in the Ethics. On both points, I shall argue, he misunderstood Spinoza’s argument."
