Chapter
5, “Kuno Fischer, Hegelian Neo-Kantian,” discusses the early philosophical
development of Kuno Fischer, who was a leading neo-Kantian in the 1860s. It
focuses on Fischer’s attempt to synthesize Kant and Hegel, and his ambivalent
attitude towards Kant’s philosophy. Fischer sometimes Kantianized Hegel and
sometimes Hegelianized Kant. He never resolved this tension in his
philosophical development, and remained, due to his abiding Hegelianism, a
reluctant neo-Kantian despite his pivotal role in the revival of Kant’s
philosophy. [Cf. Oxfordscholarship].
