Charles
Ives’s prachtige unisono-hymne A Christmas Carol, waarvan de tekst van zijn hand
is en die hij waarschijnlijk in 1894 componeerde (op 20-jarige leeftijd dus),
combineert zijn prachtige gave voor melodie met zijn voorliefde voor ongebruikelijke
ritmische patronen - hier een Berceuse-achtig wiegend ritme.
Je
vindt op Youtube diverse uitvoeringen van dit korte lied, maar niet de volgens
mij mooiste: n.l. deze van de Theatre of Voices, o.l.v. Paul Hillier die er ook
een eigen arrangement voor maakte. De track van hun album CAROLS From The Old & New Worlds [Harmonia Mundi, recorded 1993, release 1994]
