Susan James werkt vermoedelijk aan publicatie over geestkracht (fortitudo animi) bij Spinoza

Vandaag houdt Susan James eind van de middag in het kader van de J.H. Burns Memorial Lectures aan de University of St Andrews een lezing over “Putting One’s Knowledge to Work: Spinoza on fortitude” [cf.]

Over dat onderwerp sprak ze de laatste jaren al vaker, waarvan ik er hier enkele noem:

Op het afscheidsymposium van Piet Steenbakkers op vrijdag 2 september in Utrecht over "Spinoza Research: To Be Continued," sprak Susan James over: "Wanting to Understand: Spinoza on the Virtue of Fortitudo." [Cf. de gelijknamige publicatie van Uitgeverij Spinozahuis uit 2016 en cf. blog. Chris Meyns gaf daarvan een tweet mét foto van Susan James]. In dat blog schreef ik:

Ook Susan James komt niet met voorstellen voor nieuwe research maar komt met een voorbeeld, het gebruik van fortitudo door Spinoza, waarnaar volgens haar nader onderzoek zinvol is en dat ze hier alvast brengt: hoe heeft hij zijn betekenis die hij het woord laat hebben samengesteld uit welke tradities? Ze haalt er Descartes, Hobbes, Augustinus, Aquinus en Calvijn bij. Al met al in mijn ogen het enige artikel dat een uitzondering vormt en waarnaar nog wel eens gegrepen en verwezen zal worden.

Abstract: For Spinoza, one of the manifestations of philosophical understanding is the virtue of fortitudo, a commitment to living as one’s understanding dictates. This virtue in tu, haar fotorn encompasses two others; animositas or the ‘desire by which each one strives, solely from the dictate of reason, to preserve his being’, and generositas, ‘the desire by which each one strives, solely from the dictate of reason, to aid other men and join them to him in friendship’. In the first part of this paper I consider how understanding and fortitudo are related. I argue that Spinoza regards the process of cultivating fortitudo as distinct from the process of acquiring understanding. As finite beings who are striving to empower ourselves, we humans not only have to try to improve our grasp of what we and the world are like.  We also have to learn how to live in the light of our knowledge. What does Spinoza tell us about this latter process?  He shows us, I suggest, that cultivating fortitudo is both an imaginative and a political undertaking, and sketches some of the practices through which it can be developed. In doing so, however, he opens up a topic of contemporary as well as historical significance, about which there is much more to be said.

Kortom, ik denk wel dat je mag verwachten dat ze dit een keer afrond met een publicatie.
